Resident Evil 2, 3 & 7 Get Next Gen Boost

Capcom have confirmed that Resident Evil 7, along with the last gen remakes, Resident Evil 2 & Resident Evil 3 have been given an overhaul and will release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. All three will release later in the year, and at no extra cost to players who already own the games – provided all the usual criteria is met of course.

We’ve yet to seem them in action but each of the Resident Evil games, will benefit from improved visuals (including Ray Tracing), higher frame rates and 3D audio, which will further immerse you into some of the scariest outings in the series. PlayStation 5 players have an added bonus in haptic feedback from the DualSense but Capcom have remained tight-lipped on how this will be presented. Teaser screenshots can be seen below.

All of the games will be available at no extra cost for players who already own the games, so long as you upgrade within the same console family – PS4-PS5, or Xbox One – Series X|S. Of course you don’t get the upgrade if you have a disc from the previous gen and have upgraded to a digital only console. There’s no work yet on individual or bundle pricing, and since Capcom are hit and miss with their prices, we wouldn’t even like to biohazard a guess.

Resident Evil 2 Remake

Resident Evil 2 was completely rebuilt from the ground up for the PlayStation 4 & Xbox One in 2019. This fully 3D game too players back to Raccoon City where we were first introduced to Leon S Kennedy and Claire Redfield as they try to escape the city before it is sanitised following the T-Virus outbreak. Using Capcom’s RE Engine, implemented realistic visuals, heart-pounding audio, and the over-the-shoulder camera instead of the fixed camera angles of the PS1 original.

Resident Evil 3 Remake

Resident Evil 3 tells the story of S.T.A.R.S. member Jill Valentine. She is being perused by Nemesis as she tries to escape Raccoon City, during the same period as RE2. Much like the previous year’s RE2 Remake, this game makes full use of the RE engine to deliver a game that is visually appealing (depending on who you ask and how big of a horror fan they are).

Resident Evil 7 biohazard

Resident Evil 7 took the series back to it’s survival horror roots after a few entries more focussed on action than horror. This also put players in the eyes of Ethan Winters, literally. The shift to a first person perspective allowed the development team a fresh way to scare players and it worked big time. The simple setting of a rural farm, coupled with a fanatic family trying to kill Ethen Winters in dramatic fashion, created an instant masterpiece.

Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 & Resident Evil 7 will be available as next-gen upgrades across PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at some point this year.
